How to Draw a Path and Measure Distance on the Map

  1. 1

Click to place your first point

Click (or tap) anywhere on the map. A marker appears at your starting point. You can also type an address in the search bar or tap the location button to start from your current position.

  2. 2

Keep clicking to extend your path

Every click adds a new waypoint and extends the route. The distance of each segment is labeled directly on the map, and the running total updates instantly. Add as many points as you need.

  3. 3

    Drag any point to fine-tune

Every marker is draggable. Click a marker to open its popup and remove it. All measurements recalculate live.

  4. 4

Copy results or share the link

The result panel shows your total distance in km, miles, and nautical miles simultaneously. Copy any value, or share the full measurement via a URL that restores every point and setting.

Measure Path Distance in km, Miles, and Nautical Miles — Segment by Segment

If you need to measure distance on a map, GeoQux does more than show a single total. It breaks down every segment of your route and displays route distance in three unit systems at once — kilometers, miles, and nautical miles, each with its own copy button. Switch the primary unit with one click in the top-right toggle, and the selected unit moves to the top of the results while the others remain visible below.

Use the Map Distance Tool for Route Distance, Property Lines, Trails, and More

🏃

Running and cycling routes

Trace your jogging path, cycling loop, or training route to find the total distance and each leg — no fitness app required.

🚚

Delivery and logistics route planning

Plot a multi-stop delivery route and compare different stop sequences. Each segment shows its path distance so you can optimize manually.

🏡

Property line distance

Click along a fence line or property boundary to measure its total length — useful for fencing quotes and boundary surveys.

🥾

Hiking trails and outdoor paths

Trace a trail on map or satellite view and measure its total distance. Compare route options before heading out.

Sailing and aviation waypoints

Switch units to nautical miles for marine or flight route planning.

📐

Quick straight-line distance check

Place just two points for an instant as-the-crow-flies distance. Great for checking if two locations fall within a target range.

Route Distance Accuracy on the Map

How geodesic distance is calculated

Every segment is measured along Earth's curved surface using the Haversine formula with Earth's mean radius of 6,371 km. This gives the shortest path between two points on a sphere — commonly called "as the crow flies." Results are accurate to within 0.5% compared to full ellipsoidal (WGS84 Vincenty) calculations.

Straight-line distance vs. road route distance

This tool measures the straight-line geodesic distance between the points you place. It does not follow roads, trails, or terrain. For actual road-following distance, use a routing service such as Google Maps. You can approximate a road route by placing waypoints at each major turn.

Why map projection does not change distance accuracy

Distances are calculated on the spherical Earth model, not on the flat map image. On a Mercator projection, shapes near the poles appear stretched — but the distance numbers are correct regardless of where you measure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tool free?
Yes — completely free, no signup, no usage limits. Runs entirely in your browser using open-source map tiles from OpenFreeMap and Esri satellite imagery.
How accurate is the measurement?
Distances are calculated using the Haversine formula on a spherical Earth model (radius 6,371 km), accurate to within 0.5% for most practical purposes. Zoom in for higher accuracy.
Can I measure road distance or driving distance?
This tool measures straight-line geodesic distance between the points you place. It does not follow roads. For actual driving distance, use Google Maps. You can approximate a road route by placing points at every major turn.
Can I share my measurement with someone?
Yes. Click the Share button to copy a URL that encodes all your points, the selected unit, the map view, and the base map style. Anyone opening that link sees the exact same measurement.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. Tap to add points, drag to move them. Results appear in a bottom sheet you can swipe up to expand.
How do I edit a point I already placed?
Drag any marker to move it. Click a marker to open its popup and remove it. Press Ctrl+Z or click Undo to remove the last point.
What units are supported?
km, miles, and nautical miles are shown simultaneously. Click any unit in the top-right toggle to bring it to the top of the results panel.
How many points can I add?
There is no hard limit. Performance is smooth with hundreds of points on modern devices.
